FOR RELEASE SEPTEMBER 19, 2022

censor; censored; censoring \ ˈsen(t)-sə-riŋ, ˈsen(t)s-riŋ \ (transitive verb) \ to examine in order to suppress or delete anything considered objectionable.

In celebration of our Freedom to Read and Access, the North Carolina Library Association is pleased to announce that we have partnered with the American Library Association to Unite Against Book Bans, a national grassroots campaign to engage the public in the fight against censorship. This non-partisan campaign leverages the reach of national organizations representing a host of communities including librarians, educators, parents, authors, publishers, distributors, champions for civil liberties, civil rights, and equality, and more.

According to Unite Against Book Bans, “research shows that a large majority of Americans across the political spectrum oppose book bans, yet efforts to remove books continue at an unprecedented pace. Unite Against Book Bans will engage and  empower individuals and organizations to combat those efforts.”

When we unite, we are stronger.

In conjunction with the Freedom to Read and Access, we invite you to raise your voice for the right to read:

• Join with thousands of others and sign up to Unite Against Book Bans.
• Spread the word on social media: Our online toolkit has a variety of social media graphics and suggested posts that both individuals and organizations can use to raise awareness and  encourage more supporters to join our campaign.
• Use the toolkit to organize in your community, reach out to elected officials and local press, and  find out where candidates stand on this important issue.

Be sure to tag us online on Twitter and Instagram @nclibraryassociation and use the hashtags #UniteAgainstBookBans and #FreedomtoReadandAccess to let us know when you’ve taken action!

Together, we can celebrate our Freedom to Read and Access!
