librarians build communities

Who We Are: To connect librarians with community organizations in order to form meaningful opportunities for service and generosity across North Carolina.

LBC In Action: NCLA's Librarians Build Communities committee often tries to "give back" to the city hosting our biennial conference by partnering with a local organization, such as Second Harvest Food Bank.

2019 Community Partner: Forsyth Backpack Program

Please help us reach feed hungry children by donating $10 right now: www.bit.ly/NCLA-LBC2019

Our Community Partner's Mission:

Forsyth Backpack Program is a local all volunteer 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that provides nutritious food on weekends and holidays to local school children who have been identified by school personnel as being in need of food.

Without FBP, these children may have little to no access to food (healthy or otherwise) over weekends or long holidays. With the food, the children return to school better ready to pay attention, learn, and play.

LBC's Supporting Projects:

To help with Forsyth Backpack Program's efforts, this year LBC aims to raise $7,000 money that will be matched by FBP's donor network to ultimately purchase 400 cases of foodenough food to pack 3,200 backpacks with 12,800 meals.

In addition to providing weekend meals for the 425 students most often served by FBP, these backpacks will provide nearly 1200 students in up to 28 schools food for over their Thanksgiving break.

There are three ways to support FBP:

Fall Raffle

All donations to FBP can earn you an entry in our LBC raffle for the following prizes:

  • 1 two-night winter stay at a beautiful Sugar Mountain Condo
  • Signed books by John Green, Susanna Kearsley, and Kayla Rae Whitaker

    Online Summer Store

One very fun way to support Forsyth Backpack Program is to purchase swag from NCLA’s Online Summer Store before it closes at the end of September!

We continually add new designs and different kinds of items, including T-shirts, beach towels, phone cases, and magnets. It's a perfect way to show just how much librarians love the communities they serve.

Even better, we're offering FREE SHIPPING on orders over $45 through September 22!

    Check it out at bit.ly/NCLA-LBC-Shop

    Conference Packing Event

At the 2019 NCLA Conference, we're offering our first service event!

Join us on Thursday, Oct. 17, between 12:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to help pack the 400 cases of food we "purchased" for FBP.

And we'd love it if you confirm you're coming to this exciting packing event right now by RSVPing for a time slot on the Conference Volunteer Sign-Up page.

(P.S. We encourage you to sign-up for other volunteer opportunities while you’re there)
